Dunn convicted on four charges

   Michael Dunn, the man who open fired at a group of teenagers for playing loud music,  has been convicted on four charges today in court.    While Dunn was found guilty on attempted murder, the jury could not yet find a verdict on the more serious charge of first-degree murder.    It is unknown when Dunn will appear in court next for the remainder of his trial.

U.S beats Russia in Olympic hockey match

   The United States beat Russia in a very heated hockey match in the Sochi Olympic Games today.    The United States won in a shootout after they tied 2-2 with Russia. American T.J Oshie scored the winning goals.

Suspect arrested in mailbomb case

   A suspect has been arrested in the tragic mail-bomb that killed a retired lawyer and his wife .    Tennessee police say that the son-in-law of the victims was the man who they arrested. More as the story develops. UPDATE: Richard Parker, the son-in-law of the deceased couple, is being charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Information from CNN

Pregnant woman dies from snowplow

   Min Lin, a New York City resident, was killed today after she was hit from a tractor clearing snow in a parking lot.    Lin, who was 8-9 months pregnant, was rushed to the emergency room. She was announced dead on arrival, but the baby was born healthy via a cesarean section.    The snowplow was privately owned. Information from CNN

Woman found guilty of killing pregnant mother and stealing fetus

   39-year-old Julie Corey has been found guilty of first-degree murder.    In 2009, Corey brutally murdered her pregnant neighbor, Darlene Haynes, who was 8 months pregnant.    After killing the mother, she cut her open and took the unborn fetus.    While the 23 year-old mother died, the fetus survived.    Police found Corey and her boyfriend in a homeless shelter in New Hampshire just two days after the murder.    Corey now faces life in prison. Mayor found guilty of corruption

   Ray Nagin, former mayor of New Orleans, has been found guilty of 20 charges in court today.    The charges include bribery, fraud, money laundering and other corruption-related crimes.    Nagin will not return to public office.

Man kills teenager for blasting loud music

   Michael Dunn, a 47-year-old man, killed a 17-year-old who was listening to loud music in his car back in late 2012.    Dunn reportedly told 17-year-old Jordan Davis and his friends who were in the car with him to turn down the music they were playing. The teenagers did not comply, so Dunn opened fired into the car. Davis was hit by one of the bullets and died.    Dunn is charged with first-degree murder and can face up to life in prison if convicted. The ongoing trial started on last Thursday. A verdict is expected to be made very soon.

Ex-lawyer dies after a bomb was sent to his house

   John Setzer, a retired lawyer, died after he opened a bomb disguised as a package in his Tennessee home.    Setzer received the package in the mail on Monday. He opened the package, which then exploded and killed Setzer. His wife, who was near him at the time of the blast, was seriously injured by the explosion    It is currently unknown who is behind the bomb or why Setzer was targeted. UPDATE: It has been confirmed that the wife who was seriously injured, Marion Setzer, has died as a result of the bomb.

More than 90 thousand people without power

   The highly anticipated ice storm hit southeast America today, leaving over 90 thousand people without power.    Five people have died due to the storm so far. It is recommended that you stay off the road until the conditions are clear if you are in an affected area. UPDATE: The number of people without power has grown to 770,000. The death toll has doubled and the northeast is starting to feel the effects of the storm. 

Internet fights back against the NSA

   Today, many websites are participating in a protest to stop mass surveillance.    Participating websites have a banner on their site, instructing visitors to call or email their legislators.    Over 60,000 people have called and over 130,000 emails have been placed for the cause.      You can read more about the ongoing issue and the protest here .

Massive storm to hit southeast America

   A combination of ice and snow is set to cover the southeast of the country due to a massive storm coming in.    Power outages lasting for several days are expected. Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and North and South Carolina are expected to be hit the worst.    State officials are advising residents in these areas to stock up on food and emergency supplies in preparation for the storm.

Healthy baby boy born from brain-dead mother

   Last December, a pregnant woman named Robyn Benson collapsed and went brain-dead due to a cerebral hemorrhage. She was put on life support so that the baby would have a better chance of survival.    Her husband, Dylan Benson, posted on his blog  that the baby has been born and he is completely healthy.    "On Saturday evening, my beautiful and amazing son, Iver Cohen Benson, was born," Benson writes. "Iver is healthy and is the cutest and most precious person I have ever met."    With the baby born, it unfortunately means the hospital has to take Robyn off of life support.     "On Sunday, we had to unfortunately say goodbye to the strongest and most wonderful woman I have ever met. I miss Robyn more than words can explain."

Child star Shirley Temple Black dies

   Child star Shirley Temple Black dies today at 85 years old. She passed on Monday in her home in Woodside, California.    Temple passed away due to natural causes. She died with her family and loved ones around her.

Newlywed dies after her and her husband go BASE jumping

   In a Utah national park, a newlywed couple decided to go BASE jumping off a cliff. The wife, Amber Bellows, failed to open her parachute and died after the jump attempt.    The wife was the first to jump in the illegal stunt. The husband, Clayton Butler, jumped after her to save her, but he ultimately failed.

Explosion in New Hampshire facility

   A major explosion has been reported at NH Ball Bearings in Peterborough, NH.    Nearly 100 firefighters showed up to help combat the explosion. 15 people have been reported injured, including 2 with serious injuries.    The cause of the explosion is currently unknown.

Car bombs in Mogadishu leave 5 wounded

   In Somali capitol Mogadishu, there has been reports of two car bombs going off and wounding at least 5 people.    While the person or group of people who set up the bombs are still unclear, it is suspected that al Shabaab, an al Qaeda associated group, is behind the attack.    More as this story develops. UPDATE: It has been confirmed that 5 people have been wounded in the incident and no causalities have resulted from the car bombs.

Michael Sam announces he is gay

   Michael Sam, former defensive lineman for the University of Missouri, announced his sexuality in an interview yesterday.    Sam could be the only openly gay NFL player at this time.    He is expected to be drafted in the next pick and play in the 2014 season. 

Zoo kills healthy baby giraffe and feeds corpse to lions

   An 18-month-old giraffe named Marius was killed today at a zoo in Denmark.    Copenhagen Zoo killed the giraffe as he was "surplus". There was too many giraffes in the zoo, so Copenhagen decided to use him as food for other animals.    The giraffe was killed via a bolt gun and then was cut up in front of zoo-goers. Families watched as Marius was butchered and then was fed to lions.    Copenhagen released a public statement saying that the giraffe was killed to prevent inbreeding at the zoo.
